The Sun & Moon expansion, released on February 3, 2017, marked the start of the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon era and introduced Pokémon-GX, a new mechanic featuring high HP and powerful attacks, with the limitation that GX moves could only be used once per game. Some of the most notable Pokémon-GX from this set include Solgaleo-GX, Lunala-GX, and Decidueye-GX, each offering strong abilities but giving up two Prize cards when knocked out.

This expansion also introduced Alolan Pokémon, regional variants with different typings and designs, such as Alolan Dugtrio and Alolan Muk. Additionally, the set introduced Rainbow Rare cards, a new rarity featuring Pokémon-GX in shimmering multicolored foil, making them highly sought after by collectors. Secret Rare Gold Trainer cards, like Ultra Ball and Switch, added further value to the set.

With 149 cards (excluding secret rares), Sun & Moon laid the foundation for future expansions in the series, blending powerful gameplay mechanics with visually striking collector cards, making it a memorable addition to the Pokémon TCG.
