In Azul, players step into the role of artisans decorating the royal palace of Evora, inspired by King Manuel I’s fascination with the intricate Moorish tiles (azulejos) of the Alhambra.
During each round, players draft tiles from factory displays and carefully place them onto their boards to complete mosaic patterns. Points are scored for completed rows and columns, as well as for sets of five tiles of the same color.
The game ends when at least one player completes a horizontal row of five tiles. The player with the most points is crowned the winner.
Azul is easy to learn yet offers deep strategy and planning. The double-sided boards provide two modes of play: the standard side for beginners and a more challenging variant for advanced players.
Winner of multiple awards, including Spiel des Jahres 2018, Azul has become a modern classic in abstract board gaming.
